Egypt Court Sentences Man To Death For Killing Priest

An Egyptian court Saturday sentenced a man to die for the April stabbing death of a Coptic Christian priest in an attack that shocked the Arab world’s most populous nation. Nehru Tawfiq, 60, was convicted in Alexandria criminal court of murder for killing 56-year-old priest Arsanious Wadid and illegal possession of a knife. His lawyers had argued that the killing was not deliberate. Tawfiq can appeal the verdict. Wadid was killed at a popular seaside promenade in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria in April. Investigators found that Tawfiq was an Islamist with an extremist background. During last month’s court session he appeared in court in a caged-off section of the room shouting “God is great” in Arabic. He attempted to recite verses from the Quran, the Muslim holy book, ...

Egypt Jails Ex-presidential Candidate For 15 Years

An Egyptian court sentenced former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh and several prominent figures from the banned Muslim Brotherhood to lengthy jail terms on Sunday on accusations including plotting to overthrow the state. Aboul Fotouh, who is in his early 70s and according to his family suffers from several medical conditions, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, subject to appeal, the court ruling said. Rights groups say thousands of politicians, activists and journalists are detained in Egypt after unfair trials or without legal basis. Aboul Fotouh quit the Muslim Brotherhood in 2011 after disagreements over the role of religion in politics and founded the more centrist Strong Egypt party, launching an independent bid for the presidency in 2012. The inte...

Egypt: Somali Teen Who Allegedly Killed Attacker Released

A Somali teenager accused of killing a tuk-tuk driver who she alleged had tried to rape her has been released from custody in Egypt. The 15-year-old had been held for four days after handing herself in to authorities, local media report. But police and medical examiners agreed there was evidence to show she had likely acted in self-defence, Egypt's prosecutor's office said. She was released on Friday pending further investigation. According to Ahram Online, the girl told police the driver had taken her to a remote spot where he had tried to rape her. But she fought back, injuring her hands on his knife before managing to wrestle it from the alleged attacker. Egyptian Tycoon Jailed For Assaulting Orphan Girls

An Egyptian court on Monday sentenced a businessman to three years in prison for trafficking and sexually assaulting seven underage girls at an orphanage he founded. Media and real estate tycoon Mohamed el-Amin was arrested on January 8 and held in custody pending investigations into accusations that he “sexually assaulted children using force”. He now faces up to 25 years in prison if found guilty. The case came to public attention after a Facebook page accused the owner of the Al-Mustaqbal group — formerly the owner of the CBC television network before it was sold in 2018 — of sexually assaulting young girls. A judiciary source told AFP Saturday that “witnesses confirmed the testimonies of the victims” during the investigation, referring to girls at an orphanage opened by A...

Egypt, Gabon, Ghana Qualify for AFCON 2021

Egypt and Ghana have both qualified for the African Cup of Nations on Thursday and were joined by Comoros and Gambia, who will make surprising debuts at next year’s tournament. Egypt drew 1-1 in Kenya, enough to see the record seven-time champion clinch one of the two qualifying places in Group G. That result also helped Comoros take the other spot. Comoros had earlier drawn 0-0 at home against Togo but Kenya needed to win in order to maintain its hopes of qualifying in the last round of matches next week. Comoros, an archipelago of volcanic islands off the east coast of Africa, is one of the continent’s smallest countries and has a population of less than a million. But it had some memorable results in the qualifying campaign, including victories over Togo and Kenya and a 1-1 dra...

Klopp Speaks on Possible Salah Exit

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has declared that the club will not consider any bids for Egyptian Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian forward had during a recent interview declined to rule out a transfer to Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona in the future. Speculations have been rife in the media over the future of the prolific forward, especially with the Reds title defence in shatters, but Klopp has quelled rumours of a possible summer transfer away from the club. Klopp said, “It is very important – both to the team and that Mo stays here with us. It is not often that I have to praise my own players, which of course I always like to do.” “But in Mo’s case the numbers just speak for themselves. But Mo is not only a goal scorer. He is developed football-wise as well – and is a very,...
