Sepp Blatter Set To Resign

After much politicking and moves and counter moves, Sepp Blatter emerged as the president of FIFA for the fifth term. People were only coming to terms with this when suddenly the news of his impending resignation started making the rounds.

Blatter in a statement said “while I have a mandate from the membership of FIFA, I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football — the fans, the players, the clubs, the people who live, breathe and love football as much as we all do at FIFA, therefore, I have decided to lay down my mandate at an extraordinary elective Congress.”

It is clear that corruption scandal that has been rocking the federation is the main reason for this. Though hew has not actually resigned, the vultures are certainly circling and once more, the lobbying and politicking will commence in an attempt to choose his successor. Michel Platini and Prince Ali are among the most likely to replace the out-going president.

Blatter has however promised to ensure that far reaching forms are put in place before he fully steps aside. These are interesting times and Africa and the rest of the world will watch closely to see how these “far reaching reforms” will affect their lot in the world of football.
