Nigeria: Leader of the ISIS Terrorist Group Granted Visa to Nigeria

The Nigerian government was shocked and embarrassed to learn that one of the most wanted terrorist leaders in the world today was granted Visa to visit Nigeria. Ahmed Al Assir who is a top cleric of the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group, has been on the run for about two years.

He was arrested by Lebanese Security Operatives while he was attempting to board a flight to Egypt from where he was to fly down to Nigeria. Assir who was carrying a fake Palestinian passport was arrested in Saturday at the Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport.

According to reports, he had tried to alter his looks by shaving his long beard and changing his religious attire. Some other reports suggest that he may have had some plastic surgery done to further alter his image. This however did not prevent his arrest by Lebanese authorities.

The Nigerian government is currently trying to rally and save some face as it is shocked that such a highly wanted person could be coming to Nigeria with a valid Nigerian Visa. President Buhari has instructed that investigations be carried out to ascertain how and why such a thing could occur.

Aside from the embarrassment this has caused the Nigerian government, it is especially worrying that such a person should be attempting to come into Nigeria given the security situation with Boko Haram and their sworn allegiance to the ISIS sect.

If the Nigerian embassy in Lebanon could give such a wanted individual permission to come to Nigeria, one can only wonder what would have happened at the Nigerian airport if the Lebanese authorities had not arrested him. Would our security officials at our Airports have spotted him or would have sailed smoothly into Nigeria to give the Boko Haram sect more assistance?

Nigeria’s fight against terrorism is once again being ridiculed by such level of incompetence and President Buhari would certainly want to have that issue addressed properly immediately. Nigeria cannot become a safe haven for terrorists wanted all over the world.
