Nigeria wins Technovation Pitch Challenge

The team that represented Nigeria at the just concluded 2015 Global Technovation Challenge in San Fransisco, USA has emerged the winners of the high school division of the competition. Nigeria was represented by a team of four young ladies. They are: Sonam Kumar, Grace Akpoiroro, Praise David-Oku and Nmesoma Ogbonna. These team of four, developed and pitched an app called ‘Discardious’ and app developed to help manage challenges of waste disposal in Nigeria.

An excited Mrs Martha Alade, Founder of Women in Technology in Nigeria (WITIN) and the program’s coordinator in Nigeria said that this year’s team was unique. They made history by being the first Nigerian team to beat the rest of the world in the Technovation World Pitch.

A total of 64 countries participated in the competition which is divided into the high school division and the middle school division with all submitting a total of 380 apps. Of this number, only 10 teams made the shortlist of teams that would defend their project in form of a pitch while also telling the story behind their app. The Nigerian team triumphed over all these to emerge winners. Aside from pitching their app, they also had opportunity to attend workshops, network and generally add some value to themselves.

Speaking after the win, Praise David-Oku noted that the competition has opened their eyes to new opportunities and ways to use technology to solves problems in their environments. She also said “It has also motivated us to think outside the box. It has boosted my self-confidence and helped me build new relationships and networking skills. I have met new people from different parts of the world and shared ideas. It has also made me realize that I am not too young to start achieving my goals.”

Another group member – Sonam Kumar, while speaking about her experience said ” “It was wonderful, tough and very competitive. It was challenging for us, as we met and listened to people from different parts of the world tell their stories and share their powerful ideas. Above all, we learnt a lot of things about coding, networking and public speaking.”

While speaking on the future, the group said ” “We are going to empower, build and guide young girls to participate in the next Technovation competition. We will launch our app and work on our project to solve pressing challenges in Nigeria. Technovation in Nigeria has come to stay for good.” They advised parents to expose their daughters to computer training early in life and also encourage them to develop whatever technical skills they may posses by making gadgets available to them and allowing them go for competitions.
