UK Suspends Student, Work Visa Applications In Nigeria

The United Kingdom Embassy in Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of study, work and family visa applications. It explained this was because the priority has been placed on applications made under the Ukraine Family Scheme. In a statement posted on the official Twitter page of the United Kingdom Embassy in Nigeria on Tuesday, the embassy announced that Ukraine Family Scheme was launched in response to the humanitarian crisis arising from the invasion of Ukraine. The price of bread, one of the most commonly eaten staples in most Nigerian homes is set to rise if the current Russian-Ukrainian war persists. Russia is the world’s largest exporter of wheat, accounting for more than 18 percent of international exports. The downside to the war is that if supply from Russia is distorted for whatever reason, Nigeria could be faced with further surging wheat prices in its local market as a result of the supply gap, which could lead to an increase in the price of some other by-products of wheat, such as bread, wheat meal amongst others.   Former Minister of Finance Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has made it to the final stage of the race to the office of the Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Mrs. Iweala made the final cut with South Korea’s Yoo Myung-hee, Bloomberg reports. Okonjo-Iweala has experience working at international governance bodies as a former managing director of the World Bank and as a chairman at the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation. The United States has asked South Sudan to intensify its efforts at achieving sustainable peace and kicking out corruption if arms embargo and other sanctions imposed on the country would be lifted. It was disclosed by outgoing ambassador of the U.S to South Sudan, Thomas Hushek. Hushek was quoted by BBC to have said that South Sudan has to work on a “reduction in level of violence and corruption” in the system for the sanctions to be lifted. Turkey Gifts Rwanda Face Masks to Help Combat COVID-19

Rwanda’s fight against coronavirus has been boasted by donation of face masks received from Turkey. The ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, Rwanda, acknowledged receipt of the donation in a statement describing it as “a sign of friendship and solidarity between the two countries in the fight against COVID-19.” The Turkish embassy in Rwanda said Ankara offered 50,000 face masks while a private firm donated 40,000 to Kigali in show of support to the East African nation.
