Four Million At Risk Amid Kenya Food Crisis – UN

More than four million people are facing high levels of food insecurity in Kenya, according to new data released by the UN. This figure has risen from just over three million people last year. Over 900,000 children below the age of five have been found to be acutely malnourished. The entire country’s north, and much of the north-eastern regions, are facing food insecurity at crisis or emergency levels, the data classification shows. The March to May rainfall has been low, irregular and poorly distributed in much of the distressed regions, which has affected production of food. Northern Ugandans Face Starvation As Hunger Bites – UN

More than half a million people in Uganda’s north-eastern region of Karamoja are facing a high risk of hunger and starvation, according to a study by several UN agencies. Those affected are about 40% of the population in the region. In Moroto district alone, more than half of the population goes without any meal for a full day and night at least three times a month, the study found. The region has also witnessed high levels of malnutrition, especially among children under the age of five. In some cases, mothers were forced to feed their babies on a local brew made from sorghum. UN Urges Urgent Action To Avert Famine In Somalia

The UN has warned that Somalia is heading towards a famine as the country faces its worst drought in at least four decades. Currently, close to half of the population is facing crisis-level food insecurity. The UN’s humanitarian co-ordinator for the country, Adam Abdelmoula, has said the international community must act now or more people will die. He said the country was on the brink of devastating and widespread hunger and mass starvation that could claim hundreds of thousands of lives. Suspected Islamists Kill At Least 18 In East Congo Attack

Suspected Islamists killed at least 18 people in a village raid in eastern Congo on Sunday night, local sources said, while fighting resumed with the M23 rebel group in a neighbouring province. Fighters believed to be from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) killed residents and burned down houses in the village of Otomabere, in Irumu territory, Ituri province, said a witness, a local chief and a local human rights group. Congolese army spokesman Jules Ngongo confirmed the ADF attack without giving a death toll, and said Congolese forces were in pursuit of the assailants. The ADF is a Ugandan militia that moved to eastern Congo in the 1990s. The group carries out frequent attacks and killed more than 1,300 people between January 2021 and January 2022, according to a United ...

Egypt: Somali Teen Who Allegedly Killed Attacker Released

A Somali teenager accused of killing a tuk-tuk driver who she alleged had tried to rape her has been released from custody in Egypt. The 15-year-old had been held for four days after handing herself in to authorities, local media report. But police and medical examiners agreed there was evidence to show she had likely acted in self-defence, Egypt's prosecutor's office said. She was released on Friday pending further investigation. According to Ahram Online, the girl told police the driver had taken her to a remote spot where he had tried to rape her. But she fought back, injuring her hands on his knife before managing to wrestle it from the alleged attacker. Slavery Still Exists In Mauritania – UN Envoy

A UN human rights expert has called on the authorities in Mauritania to take urgent measures to implement an anti-slavery law which was passed in 2015. Following a visit to the West African country, Tomoya Obokata - the UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery - said some progress had been made in abolishing the practice but warned much more needed to be done. He said people were still being born into slavery and people affected by the practice needed help to seek justice and achieve equality. They Claim Buhari Has Done Nothing. UN Scribe, Antonio Gutteres, Says Not So By Femi Adesina

President Muhammadu Buhari and Antonio Gutteres The Yoruba people of South-west Nigeria have a saying: when a child rejects instructions at home, it is from outside that such child is trained. And that was exactly what happened on Tuesday and Wednesday, this week, when United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Gutteres visited Nigeria as part of a three nations African tour. He said it was “a visit of solidarity with all Nigerians, particularly the victims of terrorism.” The UN Scribe was visiting Nigeria for the first time, and he had probably fallen for the antics of the Western media, and some unpatriotic Nigerians who have nothing good to say about their own country. They even visit the UN and parliaments of leading countries of the world, to de-market Nigeria. Guttere...

North-East Requires Fresh $1billion to Tackle Boko Haram Crisis – UN

The North-Easter part of Nigeria needs fresh $1 billion to tackle the Boko Haram-induced humanitarian crisis affecting more than six million people in 2021, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has said. It disclosed this on Wednesday noting that a combination of escalating conflict, displacement, and disruption has impacted livelihoods worsened by COVID-19 restrictions resulting in hunger for at least 5.1 million people. The UN Agency remarked that the figure of displaced persons is the worst outlook in four years. It said, “Ongoing conflict continues to be the main driver of humanitarian needs in northeast Nigeria, where millions of people have been displaced. Longstanding insecurity and violence, compounded by climate change, and the impact of ...

Students’ Abduction: Schools must remain safe spaces to learn without fear

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has expressed sadness over the recent mass abduction of students in different parts of Nigeria. Gunmen had abducted over 300 people including students and staff of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Friday. The incident marked the fourth mass abduction of school children in the North in the space of four months. In his reaction, Guterres in a post on Twitter urged authorities to ensure the safe release of the students and the prosecution of the abductors. He said, “I’m deeply saddened to learn of yet another mass abduction of students from a school in Nigeria. “Schools must remain safe spaces to learn without fear of violence. The students must be ...

Africa, World Risk ‘Generational Catastrophe’ on Education, UN cautions

The United Nations (UN) cautions that Africa and the rest of the world could witness a “generational catastrophe” due to the closure of schools around the world amid the COVID-19 scare. This was disclosed by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a communique. Reports suggest as at mid-July, at least 160 countries had closed their schools keeping more than 1 billion students at home while at least 40 million children have missed out on pre-school. Guterres said ensuring the safe return of students to classroom must be a “top priority”. “Now we face a generational catastrophe that could waste untold human potential, undermine decades of progress, and exacerbate entrenched inequalities,” said Guterres as he launched a U.N. “Save our Future” campaign. He further stated that, “...
