Sudan Set to Begin Trial of Former President, Al-Bashir Over Role in 1989 Coup

The trial of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s former president is set to begin today, Tuesday 21 July, over his role in the military coup that brought about his regime in 1989. Al-Bashir who is already in detention for corruption charges could be sentenced to death if he is found guilty of the new charge The 76-year-old will be tried alongside 16 other accused persons in Khartoum. The trial comes as Sudan’s post-revolution transitional government has introduced a number of reforms in expectation of fully making a comeback in the international community. Nigeria: President Speaks at the International Criminal Court (ICC) Hague

Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari was invited by the International Criminal Court (ICC) Hague to deliver the keynote address. This is to mark the court's 20th anniversary celebration. According to the Nigerian ambassador to the Netherlands, Oji Ngofa, the invitation extended to President Buhari to deliver the keynote address was a sign of the court's respect for Nigeria. The judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC), sitting in a plenary session on 11 March 2018, elected Judge Chile Eboe-Osuji (Nigeria) as President of the Court for a three-year term with immediate effect. Judge Robert Fremr (Czech Republic) was elected First Vice-President and Judge Marc Perrin de Brichambaut (France) Second Vice-President.
