Issa Hayatou to take charge of FIFA

The last has certainly not been heard of the scandal rocking the football house in Zurich. About 14 top officials of FIFA have over the past few months been investigated and arrested in connection with corruption charges. Latest investigations have now affected both Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini who have both been suspended. With this suspension, the President of CAF who is FIFA’s next most senior Vice President will now take charge of FIFA.

Blatter and Platini Blatter was suspended for 90 days while Vice President  Platini and General Secretary Jérôme Valcke  were banned  provisionally from the game. Others hit by this wave of  sanctions is former FIFA vice  president Chung Mong-joon  who was fined $103,000 and then banned for six years.  The sanctions take  effect immediately.

Blatter who had voluntarily offered to step down in February had previously never been directly indicted for any crimes. However, fresh investigations have now implicated both he and Platini, resulting in their suspension and ban. These sanctions were handed down by FIFA’s independent ethics committee.

What these sanctions mean is that they cannot visit the FIFA headquarters, neither can they watch any football matches. This also puts a very big clog in the wheel of Michel Platini’s long time desire to be FIFA president.

It is now almost clear that new contenders for this seat will begin to emerge prior to the February election date previously scheduled by Blatter. This could be an opportunity for Africa to present a suitable candidate to lead the World’s Football governing body.

As investigations continue, these sanctions could be extended for a further 45 days after the expiration of the current sanctions.
