Sports: FIFA U-17 - Nigeria and Mali Set up an All West African Finals

The Nigerian Golden Eaglets edged out Mexico 4 goals to 2 in an intense semi-final game setting up an all West African finals with Mali. The Nigerian golden eaglets did not look as fit and as coordinated as they have been known to be. But for the several misses by the Mexican team, Nigeria could have easily lost this match.

The first goal of the match was scored by Mangana of Mexico in the seventh minute of the game making it the first time in this tournament that Nigeria will concede the first goal. The Nigerian team equalized through a stunning free kick by captain Nwakali.

Okonkwo’s deadly strike from outside the 18 yard box ensured that the first half ended two goals to one in favour of Nigeria.  Upon resumption of hostilities, Cortes of mexico in the 59th minute scored what could easily be the goal of the tournament after he beat several Nigerian defenders before calmly slotting the ball beyond reach of the Nigerian goalie.

Nigeria again took the  lead in the 67th minute through Ebere who fired in a shot from an unlikely angle. The keeper could only helplessly parry the ball slightly but it still ended in the net.

With Nigeria leading by three goals to two, the Mexicans were not as verocious as they previously were and the Nigerian team made more incursions into their area. The efforts of the Nigerian team paid off when Osimhen’s pull out resulted in a penalty. Osimhen converted the penalty earning Nigeria her 4th goal in the match and his 9th goal of the tournament.

Osimhen is now the joint record holder for the highest number of goals in the FIFA U-17 World Cup. if he scores one more goal, he will become the record holder. Nigeria is now set to play Mali on Sunday in what promises to be an epic match.

Mali Celebrates The Malian team had earlier in the day defeated Belgium by 3 goals to 1. Congratulations Africa.
