The First 90 Days in Office

In approximately 12 days, President Muhammadu Buhari would have been in office for 90 days! It is still too early to decipher how effectively he has used this gift of time. However, many who voted for him or who admire him, are understandably concerned, and clamoring for substantive direction.

In leadership and in management at every level, the number ’90’ is significant mainly because the actions of a leader during the first 90-days in a new position, generally tend to determine ultimate success or failure.

As an adjunct professor, I have a tendency to highly recommend Michael Watkins’ ‘THE FIRST 90 DAYS: Critical Success Strategies for New Leaders at All Levels.’ It’s a relatively small book worth it’s weight in gold.

I trust and hope that President Buhari and some of his senior advisors have had an opportunity to put Watkins’ suggestions to work. There are but two weeks left in this critical leadership phase.

What can and should President Buhari or any other leader for that matter do in 90 days?

1. Build credibility quickly
2. Surround himself or herself with a time-tested and result oriented team.
3. Provide a clear road map for fixing what needs fixing while preserving what needs preserving.

How should President Buhari or any leader in a new position utilize their first 90-days?

1. Break the first 90 days into 30-day chunks, with sub plans for each stage.
2. Break each 30 day window of opportunity into 10-day plans with additional sub plans.
3. Work from the desired future backwards. In other words, see where you want to be in 90 days and systematically work your way backwards, by receiving the best input possible, understanding the magnitude of the task, delegating not just positions but specific responsibilities, putting an accountability structure in place, and a review mechanism.

To not do so, is to fritter away opportunity and goodwill. To not do so is to give your many adversaries an opportunity to put their variant plans and traps in place. To not do so, is to wake up one morning to find out that the ‘magic’ momentum 90 days bestows, is gone forever.

I wishPresident Buhari and his team God speed and great success.

The clock is almost done ticking!
