President Buhari Did Not Promise A Magical Solution to Boko Haram – Honourable Babatunde

Buhari on Boko Haram

In an interview with Johnbosco Agbakwuru of the Vanguard Newspapers, Honourable Kolawole Gabriel  Babatunde, an APC lawmaker representing Akoko Southeast and Southwest at the Federal House of Representatives said President Buhari never promised to perform any magic in the resolution of the Boko Haram crises.

There has been a clear increase in the attacks credited to the insurgents since May 29 2015 when President Buhari took office. He has come under intense criticism for his administrations seeming lack of action on any front especially on the issue of Boko Haram. This criticism comes as a result of Mr President’s promises during the campaign period.

One of the pivotal issues during the Presidential campaigns was the issue of the Boko Haram scourge. In fact, while speaking with Christiane Amanpour of the CNN, President Buhari had said “We know how they started and where they are now and we will rapidly give attention to security in the country. And I believe we will effectively deal with them in two months when we get into office.”

Strongly criticizing the former administration, President Buhari had criticized them for not doing much to secure about 14 local government areas in the North. He had told CNN’s Amanpour that “We will be needing the cooperation of neighbouring countries such as Cameroon, Chad and Niger. There were efforts made by the President Goodluck Jonathan administration, but it was not good enough and it came rather late.”

Now that President Buhari has been on the same seat for over a month now, Nigerians are beginning to wonder since he already knew how to win the war against Boko Haram before he even came into office. These and more issue are the issues that Honourable Babatunde tried to throw some light on.

When asked about the promise made by President Buhari before taken office that he will end the insurgency in about two months, Mr Babatunde said “I was part of the campaign train as a stakeholder, but there was  at no point I heard that he said a magic will be performed within weeks or months. But then if that had been said, I know Mr. President is not sitting down doing nothing at the moment. He is on his toes and that is what is important; he is already proffering solution, he is already consulting; he is meeting with world leaders; he is already seeking collaboration with other nations and I think he should be commended for this.”

Nigerians are not commending President Buhari because many believe that there is nothing to be commended as at yet. President Buhari has an obligation to Nigerians and indeed the world to fulfill the promises he made to them. Aside from the promise to end the insurgency, he also made a lot of other promises which Nigerians are yet to cash in on.

With Mr President still running a solo show, with no government fully formed, it is not clear the direction in which this administration is going. Nigerians placed a lot of hope on President Buhari and their expectations are currently not being met. These are yet early days but President Buhari promised a lot which bothered on the magical hence the expectation of magical solutions.

President Buhari needs to start rebuilding the belief that millions of Nigerians placed on him when they cast their votes for him, putting him on that revered seat. Excuses and complains won’t cut it at all. Too much is at stake.

YOU ARE A GREAT LIAR! BUHARI HAS KEEP SAYING WHAT HE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO. HE VOWED TO ELIMINATE BOKO-HARAM AS SOON AS HE ENTERED ASO-ROCK IF ELECTED AS PRESIDENT. HE WAS RECENTLY ORDERED FOR THE REMOVAL OF ALL MILITARY CHECK-POINT ON THE ROAD BUT TODAY, BUHARI HAS DENIED SAYING SO. WHAT A COUNTRY PRESIDENT ? IS IT AN OLD AGE THAT CONFRONTED OR INDUCED BUHARI TO BEHAVES IN THIS WAY ? BECAUSE I COULD REMEMBER ONCE HE WAS IN SOUTH AFRICA DURING G-7 SUBMIT AND HE SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT HIS OLD AGE. A COUNTRY PRESIDENT SHOULD BE… Read more »
