Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has come out to say that the government of the United States of America was aiding and abetting the insurgents in Nigeria by refusing to sell arms to the Nigerian government. President Buhari made this statement while speaking at the United States Institute for Peace during his working visit to the U.S this week.

In his speech, President Buhari said “unwittingly, and I dare say unintentionally, the application of the Leahy Law Amendment by the United States government has aided and abetted the Boko Haram terrorists.” The US government is bound by law not to sell arms to countries it adjudges not to be upholding human rights. The U.S considers Nigeria’s legislation against homosexual marriages an abuse of human rights.

Since President Buhari took office, there has been an increase in terrorist activities resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives and damage to property. His administration has been seriously criticized for inaction and being slow. These criticisms are based on his campaign promises, chief among which was the eradication of the Boko Haram scourge within two months of his taken office and the rescuing of the Chibok girls.

President Buhari had gone to the U.S to lobby support for his government in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents and other matters. President Obama left his guest President Buhari in the U.S and went off on an official visit to some African countries of which Nigeria was not included.

The visit of President Buhari to the U.S generated so much reactions in Nigeria. Some were happy even elated, believing that the U.S will come all out to support this new administration after having a fallout with the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan especially over the gay rights issue. Some others were cautiously optimistic, noting that U.S had its own problems and should not be seen as the solution to Nigerians many problems.

Another group felt that the visit which was reported to have cost about N2.2 billion was a total waste of tax payers’ money. They noted that going to the U.S to seek help even after the U.S had made it clear that one of its primary mission is to ensure that Nigeria commits to the upholding of gay rights was simply courting trouble. Many felt that the Nigerian president was setting himself up unnecessary tension either with the U.S or at home since he will have to disappoint either the U.S by not agreeing to the gay rights issue or his people by showing any signs of considering the issue.

The gay rights issue has been roundly criticized in Africa with Nigeria being at the fore. With United States’ insistence on forcing other countries especially Nigeria to bow to their gay rights demands and the news from the Presidency that President Buhari has said no to the gay rights issue, it is now left to be seen if the romance between the U.S and President Buhari will continue.

Has the love affair gone sour so fast? Buhari has rejected the gay rights issue. Let us see if U.S will still remain his strong supporter. I have always said that the U.S only has one interest – Its own.
