Nigeria: South-East Governors Reject Ranching, Stop Herdsmen Movement

Following the threat of herdsmen attack on farms and farmers, the South-East Governors’ forum held a meeting at the Enugu government house where it made some resolutions.

After the meeting, the governors expressed their fears that the violence that appears to be trailing the herdsmen may spread to their domain. Following this, the governors decided to take proactive measures to ensure this does not happen.

Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of the forum and Ebonyi State governor said “South East Governors have noticed increased challenges in the movement of herdsmen from one state and region to another with resultant effect of massive destruction of farmland with attendant clashes with farmers.

“South-East Governors have been spending huge funds in settling farmers whose farms and crops are destroyed. We, therefore, request for an emergency meeting in South-East with federal security chiefs, farmers and herdsmen to stop the movement and prevent the clashes.”

The idea of ranching as proposed by the Federal Government was roundly rejected by the governors. According to them, it is clear to the FG and all that the South-East does not have land for cattle colonies.

The group also threw its weight behind the call by Ohaneze ndi igbo for the restructuring of Nigeria. In its opinion, that is the only way to move Nigeria forward.
