The Presidency has responded to PDP’s rejection of the appointment of Mrs Amina Bala Zakari as the acting INEC boss. responding to PDP’s claim that the appointment did not follow due process and reeked of nepotism, the Special Adviser to the Presidency on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina said that due process was followed.

The PDP through its National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metu had said that the appointment of Mr Zakari was a strategic move by the APC to put structures in place to ensure that through whatever dubious means, judgments delivered at the various election tribunals in the states where they (the APC) lost, will be in their favour, helping them win back those states.

Speaking further on the issue, Mr Adesina said “We have noted with regret, the latest tirade against President Muhammadu Buhari issued today by the PDP’s Spokesman, Mr Olisa Metuh,” He went on to say that “Mr Metuh’s spurious claims of her appointment having been influenced by ‘personal relationship with the Presidency’ and a Governor in the North-West ‘to pave the way for the APC’ at election tribunals should be disregarded by the public.”

The PDP has also claimed that Professor Jega handed over to INEC’s National Commissioner and wondered why the Presidency had to overrule. Responding to this claim, Mr Adesina said “President Buhari certainly did not ‘overrule’ Prof. Attahiru Jega in appointing Mrs. Amina Zakari as the Acting INEC Chairman, as Mr Metu alleged. “Prof. Jega’s purported handing over to another Commissioner cannot be construed as an ‘appointment’ because only the President has the constitutional authority, which he exercised to appoint Mrs Zakari as acting Chairman of INEC.”

Adesina stated that Zakari’s appointment was based totally on merit. He also said that being the only woman of all the commissioners considered for the job, the appointment showed President Buhari’s seriousness about affirmative action in support of gender equality.

Adesina concluded by saying that by saying that PDP’s rejection of the appointment was laughable as the President’s appointment cannot be question.
