Nigeria: Presidency Replaces Ita Ekpenyong With Lawal Musa Daura As DSS Chief

Buhari Sacks Ekpenyong, Appoints Daura

The Presidency has just announced the removal of the Director General of the State Security Service. This is the arm of government constitutionally charged with the protection of the President and other top government functionaries. The former DG Mr Ita Ekpenyong is now replaced by Mr Lawal Musa Daura as the agency’s Director General.

This change of baton is not unexpected. If anything, these changes were expected much earlier than this. It will be recalled that it was reported that operatives of the DSS had been removed from the Villa. Though this news was later debunked, the clarification given by the presidency still pointed to the fact that the Presidency did not feel safe with them protecting him but rather preferred the Army for the close body security detail.

Worthy of note is that fact that this appointment has again gone to a Northerner. This comes on the heels of speculations that the President is favouring persons from the North for appointments given the fact that of all the nine appointments he has made so far, eight has gone to the North with just one going to the South West. With this change, it is left to be seen if the Presidency will now feel safe being protected by operatives of the agency whose job it actually is to Protect the President.
