Nigeria: PDP Accuses Buhari of Nepotism

PDP demands the removal of acting INEC chair person Zakari

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP Mr Olisa Metu in a press conference on Wednesday July 1 2015 referred to President Buhari’s appointment of Mrs Amina Zakari as Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as nepotistic and therefore rejected by the party. Former INEC Chairman Professor Jega formally retired from the INEC and then handed over to the National Commissioner Ambassador Mohammad Wali.

Some hours after Professor Jega handed over to Wali, President Buhari appointed Mrs Zakari to replace Wali as acting INEC Chairman. It is this appointment that the PDP is against, and therefore calling for her removal. The PDP says that due process was not followed in the appointment of Zakari. Metu went further to say that since the PDP had placed such trust in Professor Jega, “why would they not trust him on who to hold forth in the commission until a substantive Chairman is appointed, rather than appointing someone who is retiring from the commission in the next three weeks?”

Analysts believe that it is not in good taste in a country with Nigeria’s ethnic variety to have an INEC chairman who is from the same part of the country as the sitting President. This is why the PDP regarded the appointment as an act of nepotism.

The PDP has also said that the appointment of the Accountant General of the Federation did not follow due process. President Buhari had recently appointed Ahmed Idris as Accountant General of the Federation. The appointments that President Buhari has made so far has also sparked off some concern in the social media. These appointments are as follows:

1. INEC AC.CHAIRMAN – Amina Zakari
2. HEAD of Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) Mordecai Ladan
3. Account-General of Federation – Ahmed Idris
4. CSO – Abdulrahman Mani
5. State Chief of Protocol – Lawal Kazaure
6. ADC – Lt. Col Mohammed Abubakar
7. SSA Media & Publicity – Garba Shehu
8. SA Media & Publicity – Femi Adeshina

Of the eight appointments listed above, every single one apart from the Special Assistant to the Presidency on Media and Publicity, Femi Adeshina who is from the South West, every other appointee is from the North. This has begun to fuel the speculations that President Buhari is pursuing a Norther agenda. The president certainly needs to prove his detractor wrong by making appointments that have a federal character. We know Mr President wants to work with the best hands. It will however be a gross insult to other parts of Nigeria if the appointments seem to insinuate that only the North can produce the quality of hands Mr President needs to work with.
