Nigeria: Osinbajo Takes Charge of The Economy

Nigerians have been wondering at the Vice President’s role in this administration. Some have seen him as a mere puppet put in place to appease one man somewhere. However, with Osinbajo heading the National Economic Council, he is set to take charge of the country’s economy.

Speaking at the 21st Nigerian Economic Summit holding at Abuja Professor Yemi Osinbajo said that the nation was faced with monumental challenges. As is a common occurrence, he alluded to the rot that the previous PDP led governments left behind, which they now have to clean before moving forward.

He said “We are at a time of monumental challenges and tough choices, but also a time of incredible opportunities for achieving competitiveness, inclusive growth and sustainability.” He continued by saying “We are called upon to clean up the mess and rebuild the institutions that corruption had ravaged over the years.”

Osinbajo said   “we are compelled to redress the paradox of high growth figures and widening inequality, rising unemployment and poverty. It is evident that any economic model that leaves nearly half of the citizenry behind requires re-thinking.’’

He further pointed out that “this is why our economic model would involve substantial social investments over the next three years’’.

It will be recalled that the APC made huge promises in this area. Promising to pay 25 million poorest Nigerians N5000 monthly, giving public school children a free meal a day, paying the elderly some monthly allowance, paying graduates an allowance for one year after their youth service if they do not get a job within this time and many more such promises.

The APC has denied making a lot of promises they made during their campaigns. Nigerians are therefore watching to see what the vice president means by “social investments.”

Nigerians can now point their hands in a particular direction regarding anything that has to do with the economy. It is the prayer of Nigerians that all these will not end at mere grand speeches that achieve nothing. This is the vice president’s opportunity to show what stuff he is made of and prove his many critics wrong.

A square peg in a round hole. I am not suprised because in 1984 so the ‘messiah’ abandoned the day to day running of gov’t to his deputy Tunde Idiagbon to do and yet they say he is the one God has sent to redeem the colapsing nation. I am standing by and watching oooo.

Kenneth, it means if you a head you will be in charge of all sectors? In any offices delegation of duty is very essential if that oga at top wants to succeed. PMB is doing that as recognition of his deputy. Pls kindly answer this question, which part of the sector was given to Sambo during Goodluck?
