Nigeria: Nigerian Police Shoot Doctor During Peaceful protest In Imo State

A peaceful protest planned by the Nigerian Medical Association of Imo State turned turned bloody when one of the protesters Dr. Bende Azudialo a Consultant Family Physician in the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, FMC was shot in the head by the Police. The president of the association has issued a warning that unless the Police Officer who fired the shot is found and prosecuted, they will embark on an indefinite strike.

On the orders of Dr. Hyacinth Emele the president of the Imo State branch of the NMA, a three day warning strike has already commenced. Speaking at a press conference, he said “If the policeman that fired the lethal shot is not identified and prosecuted, doctors will commence indefinite industrial action. The security agencies and Imo State Government should note that all hospitals in the state will close shop thereafter until the erring policeman is fished out and punished.”

On the condition of the victim, he said “The initial report we got from the medical team was that Dr. Azudialo lost about 1.5 litres of blood when he was rushed to the hospital and that was a substantial loss.”

While speaking on the protest, another member of the NMA Doctor Darlington Akukwu noted that the association when through the proper process to legally hold a peaceful protest. According to him, they had written the Police through the Police Commissioner, the Directorate of State Security (DSS), The Road Safety Commission and other relevant bodies, informing them all of the peaceful protest. Doctor Akukwe continued by saying “We processed peacefully until we got to Orlu Road Roundabout. The police barricaded the road and when we tried to explain our mission to them, they started firing teargas canisters. One of them later fired a shot that wounded Dr. Azudialo.”

The NMA has called on the Federal Government and the IG of Police to get involved in the matter and find out why the Imo State government would order the police to fire on innocent, peaceful protesters.

The Imo State Command of the Nigerian Police Force has however released a statement debunking these claims. According to a press release signed by DSP Andrew Enwerem, Police Public Relations Officer of the Imo State Command, there was no shooting. The full text of the press release is attached below:

“The attention of the Imo State Command has been drawn to the news in circulation that the Police shot a medical doctor during their protest march. The news is not only false in its entirety but also malicious as no Policeman shot at a medical doctor during the protest as it is being circulated. However, the true position of the incident was that, on 4th February, 2016 at about 1100hrs, members of the Nigeria Medical Association, Imo State Chapter embarked on a protest march against concession of government owned hospitals in the state.

The protesting doctors took over the major streets in Owerri metropolis, causing traffic log jam and discomfort to members of the public. From Freedom Square where they all converged, they suddenly advanced towards the Government House, infiltrated at this point by miscreants who started throwing stones and other offensive objects at the Policemen who were there to control the situation.

In the ensuing fracas, Police had no choice but to apply reasonable force, using teargas canisters to bring the situation under control. The crowd was subsequently dispersed.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Imo State Police has no problem with medical Doctors in the state. The claim that a doctor was shot is totally false in its entirety. The situation was professionally handled and it is reiterated that the medical doctors should produce the doctor shot and extract of bullets recovered from his body to substantiate their claim. Press men who witnessed the incident could also be required to produce pictures/videos of the incident indicating same.

The Command wishes to assure the general public of the Command’s readiness to carry out its statutory duties of maintaining peace and order at all times, with total display of regard to fundamental right of the citizens. Members of the public are advised to remain law abiding, please.”

I don’t understand why the Nigeria Police should be using live ammunition on defenceless people. The IGP should take this up as a matter of great public concern.
