Nigeria: National Economic Council Inaugurated By President Buhari

After weeks of inaction, President Mohammady Buhari has taken a step towards articulating an economic agenda for the nation by inaugurating the National Economic Council (NEC). The National Economic Council which is composed of governors of all 36 states, ministers of relevant ministries including he Minister for the FCT is an economic advisory body to the president.

While inaugurating the council today June 29 2015, President Buhari reminded the council of the challenges and issues that are currently in need of urgent attention and his own personal commitment to tackling them.

President Buhari promised to be transparent in his dealings with the nation’s resources. He also promised to abide by the dictates of the constitution of Nigeria and also to fight the Boko Haram scourge. He also asked the affected states to take stoke of their losses and forward to him for onward transmission to the G7 who have requested for it.

On the issue of unpaid salaries, Mr President encouraged the governors to do all possible to pay up these salaries so as to alleviate the sufferings of the many families affected by the unpaid salaries. He also encouraged states to work together on certain projects that could link one or more states.

The with the FEC not fully constituted as there are currently no Ministers, the ministries included in the NEC were represented by their Permanent Secretaries. The council is expected to be headed by the Vice President Professor Osibanjo.
