Lawmakers demand that handover note be made public

The Nigerian lawmakers, after settling the rift they had been embroiled in for weeks, settled down to the business of legislation. One of the issues that came up at plenary was a motion moved by one of the lawmakers demanding that President Buhari make public the handover notes presented to him by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Moving this motion, Hon. Uzoma Nkem Abonta representing Ukwa East/West of Abia State said Nigerians should not have to depend on rumours and hear says to get information of the contents of the handover notes. He believes that Nigerians are entitled to know the contents of the handover notes with of the exception of whatever parts of the note that has to do with national security.

Hon Abonta said “on the expiration of the tenure of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan on May 29, 2015, he presented a Handover Note of stewardship of his administration to President Muhammadu Buhari.” The argument is that since President Jonathan served the Nigerian people, the report of how well or badly he served them should be made available to them.

Members of the house had divergent views regarding this motion as it look like responses and views were based on party affiliations. However, at the end of the day, there was a wider acceptance of this motion as more members supported the motion.

Nigerians are certainly going to want to have access to these document so as to ascertain for themselves the state of the nation as left by former President Goodluck Jonathan
