Nigeria: FG Spent N19 Billion on Roads and N64 Billion Travels in 2015 - Finance Minister
Why are we traveling? How are we traveling? What’s it costing us to travel? – Kemi Adeosun (Minister of Finance)

The Nigerian Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun while speaking on Channels Television made a shocking revelation to Nigerians. According to her, The FG spent a whooping N64 Billion on travel expenses in 2015 as against a total of N19 Billion spent on roads throughout the federation.

What percentage of this N64 Billion was incurred by the Presidency? The Minister made this revelation while trying to tell Nigerians that we (the FG) could not go on wasting money the way they did in the past. She asked some vital questions. She said “Why are we traveling? How are we traveling? What’s it costing us to travel?”

Nigerians have been complaining about the numerous travels of Mr President and the cost of these travels to the already stretched economy. The Minister’s statement is sure to raise more question on this issue.

Top among these questions will be. What percentage of this N64 Billion was incurred by the Presidency? The Minister went on to explain how they were tackling this. She said “So, we set up an efficiency unit and we are looking at those expenses.”

Once again, we must ask this question. Will the Presidency’s travel expenses be under consideration? If her next statements are anything to go by, it appears that these huge travel expenses is being blamed on other government workers and not the Presidency. Not even the Ministers and Permanent Secretaries.

She revealed that no government worker aside from Ministers and Permanent Secretaries would henceforth fly first class or business class on the bill of the government. She also said that they had held talks with airlines to get discounts for their bulk usage.

The Presidency maintains over 10 Jets. What is the cost to the nation’s economy? The FG cannot be sincere in its bid to reduce spending if the Presidency, his Ministers and Permanent Secretaries cannot lead by example. The Nigerian President should learn a few things from John Magufuli, the Tanzanian President.

I think APC has been in power since may 2015 they should be able to explain to Nigerians how they spent 64 bn on travels and only 19 bn on road.
