Boko Haram – President Buhari Sets December as Deadline for the End of Insurgency

Boko Haram insurgency deadline now December

President Muhammodu Buhari has set a new deadline as target for the end of the Boko Haram insurgency. The new deadline is now December.  Since President Buhari came into office, there has been a marked increase in the attacks by the Boko Haram militants. His administration has been widely criticized for this.

During his campaigns, ending of the insurgency and bringing back the abducted Chibok girls were among his main points. In fact, in one interview on CNN, Mr President had said that his administration will end the insurgency within 2 months of taking office. He was a very vocal critic of President Goodluck Jonathan’s approach to the fight against Boko Haram. At one time, he went as far as saying that an attack on Boko Haram was an attack on the North of Nigeria.

President Jonathan did not receive the support of the U.S and other countries in the west. The U.S did not just refuse to sell arms to Nigeria, they went on to pressure other countries into not selling arms to Nigeria. The Nigerian army only started recording major successes when Nigeria turned to China and Russia for arms. With this support, the army was able to dislodge the Boko Haram fighters from the areas they had captured, releasing hundred of captives.

Today, with President Buhari now in power, the sect appears to have woken from their slumber and gained fresh impetus. President Buhari who enjoys a cordial relationship with the West, mainly the U.S was highly disappointed when once again the U.S refused to sell arms to Nigeria, citing human rights abuses.

The two months that President Buhari promised is over and clearly the insurgency’s end is no where in sight. With the appointment of these new service chiefs and the setting of December as the new deadline, the insurgency will have persisted in strength for about 5 months longer than promised by Mr President. It is hoped that this new deadline will be met.
