Angelina Jolie made an unexpected appearance at the African Union Summit on Friday the 12th of June 2015. She came as a UN special envoy on refugee matters. Speaking as part of a panel which included African Union Commission Chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Senegalese activist Bineta Diop and British Foreign Secretary William Hague, Jolie spoke on the issue of rape and how it can be regarded as a weapon of warfare.

In her speech in which she called on African representatives to support women’s rights, Jolie noted that despite the fact that there was a global epidermic of violence against women both conflict and non-conflict zones, the issue is still not given the attention it deserves. She said it is actually regarded as a lesser crime.

This stopover by Jolie is part of a whistle-stop international tour for her. Last week, she was in the U.K and France
