Nigeria: Pregnant Woman, Others Killed As Soldiers Raid Agatu

Nigerian soldiers have reportedly stormed six Agatu villages, killing a pregnant woman and five others in the process. According to reports, the operation was carried out in response to the killing of a soldier by some youths in the area at the weekend.

The army has however denied the reports. According to them, there was no attack nor was there any deaths. Brig. Clement Apere, Brigade Commander of the 707 Special Force said “he operation we conducted in the area was carried out in a professional way.”

Reports from a source however contradicts this. According to reports from Punch Newspapers, a phone call to their correspondent confirmed that 6 villages were indeed attacked and sacked by the soldiers. The villages attacked include: Olegadakolo, Ikpele, Otugologwu, Iwali, Okpanchenyi and Egba.

According to the source, the pregnant woman was killed by a stray bullet. A village who spoke ananonymously said “This is genocide on our people, as I’m talking to you now, six villages have been sacked, children and women have moved out of the affected villages, while many people have been arrested by the invading soldiers.”

In another twist, Mr. Mike Inalegwu, the sole administrator of the council also denied the claims. He said “There is no iota of truth in that, no one was killed, the military were only on the mission to recover their arms and ammunition.”

The army said it arrested just one person during the exercise.
