The United Nations (UN) cautions that Africa and the rest of the world could witness a “generational catastrophe” due to the closure of schools around the world amid the COVID-19 scare. This was disclosed by U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a communique. Reports suggest as at mid-July, at least 160 countries had closed their schools keeping more than 1 billion students at home while at least 40 million children have missed out on pre-school. U.S Gives Conditions for Lifting Sanctions Imposed on South Sudan

The United States has asked South Sudan to intensify its efforts at achieving sustainable peace and kicking out corruption if arms embargo and other sanctions imposed on the country would be lifted. It was disclosed by outgoing ambassador of the U.S to South Sudan, Thomas Hushek. Hushek was quoted by BBC to have said that South Sudan has to work on a “reduction in level of violence and corruption” in the system for the sanctions to be lifted. Arms embargo on South Sudan was extended in May by the United Nations Security Council for a duration of one year to block the flow of weapons to armed groups in the country. Turkey Gifts Rwanda Face Masks to Help Combat COVID-19

Rwanda’s fight against coronavirus has been boasted by donation of face masks received from Turkey. The ministry of foreign affairs and international cooperation, Rwanda, acknowledged receipt of the donation in a statement describing it as “a sign of friendship and solidarity between the two countries in the fight against COVID-19.” The Turkish embassy in Rwanda said Ankara offered 50,000 face masks while a private firm donated 40,000 to Kigali in show of support to the East African nation. Rwanda took delivery of the masks on Thursday. Africa: Kofi Annan Passes On at 80

Koffi Annan, former United Nations Secretary-General, has passed on at the age of 80. His death was announced in a tweet from his Twitter account @KofiAnnan. The tweet read "It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness." Kofi Annan passed on in Switzerland and his family has requested that some privacy be accorded them as they mourn the passing of their father and the Nobel Peace Prize winner. They however promised to announce arrangements for his burial later.
