President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the release of $21 million (about N4.2 billion) for the fight against Boko Haram. In his campaign promise, the president promised to eradicate the sect within two months of taking office. With two weeks already gone, the president is putting everything in place to ensure the sect is indeed eradicated.

These funds are part of the $100 million that Nigerian pledged to the Multinational Joint Task Force. While speaking at the Peace Security Council meeting which he chaired at the African Union Summit held in South Africa, Mr President urged African leaders to work together to eradicate violence and conflicts so as to bring lasting peace to Africa. Responding to President Buhari’s speech and call to action, The AU approved the release of $30 million dollars for the Multinational Joint Task Force.

The sect over the weekend attacked a town in Yobe State destroying buildings. However, no lives were recorded to have been lost. Before this attack, they had attempted to attack the town on Saturday night but were repelled by the army. They however regrouped and within 6 hours (between 6 and 7am) and attacked the town again.

It will be recalled that though the president castigated the army and the former president for having to rely on their neighbours – Niger, Chad and Cameroon – to help in the fight against the terror group, he last week went to these same countries to seek their support in the fight against the sect.

With the release of the these funds and the relocation of the military command post to Maiduguri, Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the eradication of this sect as promised by Mr President. With cooperation from other African countries, this goal can be achieved.
