Shakeup in the Nigerian Army

There has been a major shakeup in the Nigerian Army. With this shakeup, about 334 officers have been affected, having been moved from one position to the other. This move is the first major step taking by the new Army Chief Major General Tukur Buratai. Part of it also resulted from the vacuum created by the promotion of some officers to higher positions.

The General Officers Commanding 1, 2, 3, 81 and 82 Divisions, Operations Pulo Shield and Safe Haven of Niger Delta and Plateau States were affected. Some of the breakdown are as follows:

– Major General S. Yusuf who was the General Officer Commanding 82 Division has been moved to the Defence Headquarters as Chief of Training and Operations.

– Major General S.N Muazu moved to the Headquarters Infantry Corps from 2 Division.

– Major General M.A Koleoso is now Commander TRADOC

– Major General M.T Ibrahim, is now Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy from Department of Army Standard and Evaluation.

– Major General L.K.J Ogunewe is now the Chief of Policy and Plans.

– Major General F.O Alli, is now Chief of Training and Operations.

– Major General A.A Salihu is now Chief of Logistics.

– Major General A.G Okunola, now Commands Operation PULO SHIELD (JTF).

– Major General T.C Ude, is now Commander of OPERATIONS SAFE HAVEN (STF Jos).

– Major General L.W Wiwa is now Deputy Commandant of Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre.

– Major General A Oyebade moved to 1 Division as the General Officer Commanding.

– Major General L.C Ilo, – General Officer Commanding 2 Division.

– Major General H Umaru, – General Officer Commanding 3 Division

– Major General I.H Edet, – General Officer Commanding 81 Division.

– Brigadier General I Attahiru – Acting General Officer Commanding 82 Division.

– Brigadier General A.H Saad – Acting Director of Military Intelligence.

– Brigadier General A.T Hamman – Acting Provost Marshal

– Brigadier General M.O Uzoh – Acting Commander, Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.

– Brigadier General A.A Jidda – Acting Commander Corps of Supply and Transport.

– Brigadier General L.F Abdullahi – Acting Commander, Nigerian Army Education Corps.

– Brigadier General S.O Olabanji – Commander 2 Brigade.

– Brigadier General F Yahaya – Commander, 4 Brigade.

– Brigadier General M.S.A Aliyu – Commander 21 Brigade.

– Colonel SB Kumapayi – Commander 7 Division.

– Colonel R Abubakar – Acting Director Defence Information.

This shakeup affected about 37 Major Generals, 57 Brigadier Generals, 128 Colonels, many Lieutenants Colonels among others. It is expected that this shakeup will also make the army more effective especially in the face of growing criticism regarding the increase in terrorist attacks led by the Islamic militant group – Boko Haram.
