30 killed by Boko Haram militants

Over the weekend, no fewer than 30 persons were killed by gun suspected to be Boko Haram militants in Birnin-Magaji, Zamfara State in Northwest Nigeria. These attacks took place in two villages – Kokeya and Chigama.

Speaking to reporters on the issue, the local government chairman Muhammad Gusami said that the gunmen first attacked Kokeya village. According to him, they rode in on motorcyles, set homes on fire and made away with livestock. Two persons were killed in this attack.

The attackers were said to have returned, but this time to Chigama which is a neighbouring village where they killed over 30 persons. According to Gusami, the bodies of the victims are still being recovered from the surrounding bushes.

Normalcyis said to have returned to the area following the movement of the military and police into the region. The death toll from the attacks in the last week alone is in excess of 200 persons.
