Boko Haram attacks Mungonu village

A group of suspected Boko Haram militants attacked a village in the Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State leaving about 12 persons dead and 7 others with gunshot wounds. The militants were said to have been escaping from a coordinated air and ground attacks carried out on an abandoned camp where they were trying to regroup. While the attack was on, those who were able to escape went into the surrounding villages.

The escapees were armed with AK-47 rifles and when they sneaked into the villages, they set fire to the buildings which mainly had thatched roofs and they shot at the residents, killing about 12 and leaving about 7 with gunshot wounds.

Mongonu was in the news last week when the vigilante group discovered a bag containing explosives in an abandoned camp near the village.  The explosives accidentally exploded killing about 23 persons and leaving many others injured.

This latest attack occurred during the same period that the twin suicide bomb explosions occurred at Maiduguri while  Vice President was visiting.
