Chad: No Negotiation With Boko Haram Please! - Chadian President

The Chadian President Idriss Deby has come out to categorically speak against negotiating with the Boko Haram terrorists.

President Deby said this while speaking with Journalists on Tuesday. He confirmed that the hitherto known leader of the Boko Haram sect Abubakar Shekau was no longer leading the sect since has been reported dead.

According to Mr Deby who was speaking to Journalists as they celebrated their 55th Independence, the group is now being led by one Muhamat Daoud who is said to be open to dialogue. Mr Deby however spoke against this.

He said “There is someone apparently called Muhamat Daoud who is said to have replaced Abubakar Shekau and he wants to negotiate with the Nigerian government. For my part, I would advise not to negotiate.” His statement is certainly in response to hints by the Nigerian Buhari led government that they are willing to talk with the terrorist sect. There are even talks of granting them amnesty and rehabilitating them.

As far as Mr Deby was concerned, progress was being made in the fight against the sect. He agreed that the issue of suicide bombings that used mainly women was a major concern with constant attacks going on in Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon. He therefore noted that the main concern was preventing these actions. According to him, there is a need to “avoid terrorist acts and that is why we must organise at the regional level to prevent bomb-making materials and other explosives entering our countries.”

Mr Deby is confident that the group has already been dessimated. He said their broken up Boko Haram groups littered around the Nigerian North-east bordering Cameroon. He said “The war will be short with the setting up of the regional force. It will be over by the end of the year.”

Given this optimisim, he sees no reason why their should be any form of Negotiation with the sect. It is already public knowledge most countries of the world do not negotiate with terrorists.
